Katadyn Hiker vs MSR MiniWorks

Katadyn hiker water filter

The Katadyn Hiker and the MSR MiniWorks are two of the more popular hiking, camping and backpacking water filters on the market. Of the two, which is the better choice? If all you look at is price then the Katadyn Hiker is the easy winner at around $56, which is $20 less than the MSR MiniWorks which comes in a around $75. So can we justify the MSR Miniworks costing $20 more than the Katadyn Hiker? Let’s take a look and find out.

Both the Katadyn Hiker and the MSR MiniWorks have been on the market for years, if not decades. The Katadyn Hiker started off under the Pur water filter bandname in the mid to late 1990s. I know this because I bought one of the Pur water filters before Katadyn bought the outdoor line of Pur water filters. The Katadyn Hiker replacement filters will perfectly fit my Pur filter that is over 25 years old. From time to time those old Pur water filters will pop up on Ebay at a discounted rate. So if you wanted to save a few dollars keep and eye on Ebay, get one of those older filters, then put a new replacement filter in it. But after you do that the cost is around that of a new filter.

Current Daypack Setup, Thoughts, Suggestions?

Military Surplus Patrol Pack

Having a good daypack packed and ready to go can save a lot of time and frustration.  Rather than grabbing a backpack and cramming gear in it in an impromptu manner, I like to have a daypack with exactly the type of gear I usually need on a day hike.  Knowing what to bring in a daypack comes from experience.  Sure we could look up some youtube videos, but what someone brings on their hikes may not be well suited for your situation.  For example, someone in a desert may bring a lot of water, while someone who hikes around creeks and streams may need more mosquito repellent than other locations.

In this article we are going to cover my current daypack setup and how it has changed over the years.

The backpack itself is a military surplus patrol pack bought off Ebay.  This backpack has MOLLE webbing, a large main compartment and a smaller outer pouch.  Heavy and bulky gear go in the main compartment to move weight closer to your body, while lighter gear goes in the outer pouch.

Sawyer PointONE As A Gravity Filter

Sawyer PointONE gravity filter

The Sawyer PointONE is my new favorite water filter. Depending on water conditions, it can filter up to one millions gallons, and the flow rate beats the Sawyer Mini water filter hands down.

However wonderful the Sawyer PointONE water filter is, the user still has to either fill up a bag or water bottle, then attach the bag or bottle to the filter. Filling a water bottle with a small opening can be a pain, and sometimes an act in frustration. Rather than using the bag that was included with the Sawyer PointONE water filter, I bought a two liter platypus bag. One end of the platypus bag opens, and water is simply scooped up from the water source.

Think of the platypus bag as large heavy duty ziplock bag with a hose attachment. The bag can then be hung from a tree limb, or from the side of a tree. From there a plastic hose is attached, with the Sawyer PointONE water filter inline between the platypus bag and the water bottle.

How Good Does A LifeStraw Work?

LifeStraw Water Filter

Surely everyone has heard of a LifeStraw? It is a simple tube that is a water filter. Place the inlet into the water, then suck the water through the tube. Seems simple enough right? Almost too good to be true?

If something seems to god to be true it usually is, except for the LifeStraw.

Back in March of 2017 I decided to take the plunge and ordered a LifeStraw from Amazon. In April I took the LifeStraw on a hiking trip and gave it a test run.

First impressions were very good. It was just like pulling water through a straw. The water took a few seconds to get through the filter, but when it did, the flow was excellent.

Is Two Step Water Purification Needed?

Maxpedition Condor II backpack next to creek

Is two step water purification needed? This could be in the event of a collapse of society, or on a hiking / camping trip.

There is a common misconception about filtration and purification. Filtration removes bacteria, protozoa and cyst, but does nothing to viruses. Purification affects bacteria, protozoa, cyst and viruses. Purification can be by any means – UV light, filters that remove a virus, chemical treatment.. etc.

Most water filters on the market have a pore size of 0.1 microns. The CDC recommends a maximum pore size of 0.01 microns for viruses. If a purifier says it has a pore size of .1 or .2 microns, it is only a filter. A virus will slip through a .1 or .2 micron filter.

New Sawyer PointOne Water Filter

Sawyer PointOne water filter

Time to get a new water filter. I decided to shelf the Katadyn Vario and pick up a Sawyer PointOne.

The Katadyn Vario has had a number of issues, such as leaking around the head. The final straw was when the hinges on a pump piston broke loose when checking my gear.

I was getting ready for a hiking trip, going over my gear, picked up the Katady Vario, looked it over, worked the handle, and the plastic hinges that work one of the pistons snapped. The hinge did not break, they just came out of their notches.

Berkey replacement spigot

Berkey water filter spigot

A few months ago my 2 year old granddaughter pulled on the factory plastic Royal Berkey water filter spigot. Something cracked or broke because the spigot started leaking where it connected to the Royal Berkey housing.

The spigot was removed from the Berkey, gaskets were checked, everything put back together and it still leaked. Something was broke so time to find a replacement.

While looking for a replacement I decided I did not want to go back with the factory spigot. I got on amazon, looked around and came across a Stainless Steel works beverage dispenser. What caught my eye was the high rating from uses.

I took the leap and ordered two of them. One for the Royal Berkey and one for a tea dispenser.

Steripen Sidewinder First Impressions

Steripen Sidewinder Water Purifier

The Steripen Sidewinder is a hand powered unit that purifies water with UV light. Being hand powered means you can use the unit when there is no electrify, and no batteries required. The SteriPen website claims the UV bulb is supposed to be good for 8,000 one liter treatments. 8,000 liters is an estimated 2,116 gallons.

Fill the included water bottle, then crank the handle for 90 seconds. If you are not cranking fast enough, there are two LEDs that will flash red. When the 90 seconds of cranking has been achieved, the LEDs will flash green.

Instead of cranking for a full 90 seconds, you can crank for 30 seconds, swirl the unit, crank for 30 seconds, swirl the unit, crank for 30 seconds, swirl the unit. the SteriPen website says not to pause between cranking for more then about 6 or 7 seconds.

Priorities in preparing plans

Drinking water after SHTFThere are 3 basic priorities in prepping plans – food, water and shelter. Some people like to throw in fire, or the ability to make fire. But if you throw in fire, you need to crawl out from under your rock from time to time.

Some things should be a given, such as packing medicines, fire, or considerations for special needs people. Its impossible for someone to list all of the considerations people might face. Whether its medicines, flood insurance, homeowners insurance, preps for people with special medical needs,,,,, only the reader is going to be familiar with special plans they need to make.

Items such as first aid kits, flashlights, copies of important papers are a given. Do you really need to be reminded of things you should already know about? Do adults have to be reminded to brush their teeth or take a shower before they go to work? We know we should be doing certain things, so I see no reason to go over the same list everytime the discussion comes up.

Now that the special needs and the given items are behind us, lets talk about priorities in a prepping list.

Identify your personal priority.

Take steps to minimize the priority during a disaster.

Post Apocalyptic Survival Gear

List of survival gear that I think would be useful in a post apocalyptic world.

1. Knowledge – This starts with having an understanding of how the human species acts during a long term survival situation. Find some history books on amazon about the black death of 1348 – 1350. Read those books and get a grasp on how people acted and what they resorted to. Some of the stories look like they came straight out of a Hollywood movie – like starving people digging up dead bodies to cannibalize the remains.

Part of your survival library should include resource material on gardening, raising livestock and farming.

First aid manuals with information on diseases and wound treatment.

2. Water filter – Without safe drinking water, life as we know it can not exist. Diseases like Cholera, Typhoid, E. Coli, Cryptosporidiosis, Giardiasis, Shigella and Salmonella can wipe out entire communities in a matter of days.

There are water filters, and then there are “water filters.” If you have a family with 4, 5 6,,, 12 people, then adjust your water filter size to fits your needs.

Then there is the problem of drinking water in an urban survival situation. Most people that live in cities do not have access to a water well or a creek or stream. Once the water gets cut off, thats it.

Royal Berkey Water Filter at the Bug Out Location

Royal Berkey water filter

Between July 30 – August 1 my family and I spent 3 days at the bug out location. While we were there, I decided to hook up the Royal Berkey water filter and give it a test run. The Royal Berkey had been assembled, but never actually used. And like all survival gear, it needs to be tested before its actually needed.

Its not enough to have survival plans, those plans have to be tested from time to time in a variety of conditions. And then, the results of those test have to analyzed. From the results of those test, what do you need to improve the outcome?

Water is one of the basic survival needs- food, water and shelter. But having just “water” is not good enough, it needs to be “safe water.”

Options For Survivalist Water Filters

Drinking water after SHTF

Why should Survivalist worry about water filters? Because when the city water supply stops, the water in the local lakes and streams may not be safe to drink. Most survivalist have stockpiled water, and that is fine – there is nothing wrong with stockpiling water. But you need some kind of solution for after your stockpiles of water run out. A lot of people might say “I’ll just dig a well if I need water” – ok, lets get back to reality. Most of people are not going to dig a well overnight.

Here is short list of waterborne diseases and parasites:

  • Cryptosporidium
  • Cholera
  • E. Coli
  • Dysentery
  • Salmonellosis
  • Polio
  • Legionnaires’ disease

The first filter for us to look at is the Royal Berkey. The Royal Berkey water filter is made out of 304 stainless steel, has a capacity of approximately 3.25 Gallons, and has 2 filters (with each filter being able to filter an estimated 3,000 gallons of water).
