Ultimate Homemade Fire Starter Kit

Homemade Fire Starter Kit

Homemade fire starter kit made out of a pill bottle

Let’s put together the perfect, or rather the ultimate fire starter kit.  With so many fire starter kits on the market why should we make one?  Because its a fun way to pass the time.  Surely there are times in the evening when the reader is bored and may want something to pass their time?  So why not break out your camping, hiking, backpacking, survival… gear and tinker around with things?

Some people may toss a lighter or a pill bottle of matches in their backpack and call it a day.  The honest truth is I have done that myself.  There have been times when I threw together a quick and easy fire starter kit, and when I needed to build a fire the kit barely got the job done.  On a camping trip in December 2020 not only did the striker in my fire starter kit fail, but the striker in the lighter also fell apart.  Luckily there was a lighter in the boat survival kit so I was able to get a fire going without a lot of hassle.  Having the primary and the backup fire starting source fail was rather aggravating, so I set out to make a more reliable fire starting kit than just tossing matches in a pill bottle of buying cheap lighters.

Fire Starter Bill of Material

  • Medium sized pill bottle – around 3 1/2 inches long with cap
  • Strike anywhere kitchen matches
  • Strike on box kitchen matches
  • Strike on box or strike anywhere cigarette matches – Diamond brand name
  • Bic mini-lighter
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol prep pads
  • Paper towel

Why a combination of strike anywhere and strike on box matches?  That way all of our eggs are not in one basket.  It may seem odd, but I found strike on box matches last longer than strike anywhere matches.  When the matches reach a decade old it seems the head of the strike anywhere matches would break off rather than lighting, while strike on box matches do not have the same issue.

Perfect Fire Starter Kit Instructions

Let’s start out my emptying the strike anywhere or strike on box cigarette matches into another container.  This container should keep the matches safe as all we want is the strike off the side of the package.  Take the pair of scissors and cut one, or both, of the strikers off the box and set to the side.

Pill bottle fire starter kit

Next we need two alcohol prep pads, and stack them on top of each other.  Insert the prep pads into the pill bottle, then side striker into the pill bottle with the abrasive side facing out.

Fill the bottle around 3/4 full with a combination of strike anywhere and strike on box matches, leaving enough room for the mini-lighter.  Insert the lighter into the bottle.  Add matches to fill any empty space.

Tear off a piece of tissue and stuff around the top of the pill bottle.  The sole purpose of the tissue is to keep the matches from moving around in the bottle. If done properly there should very little to no noise when the bottle is shaken, but do not shake  too hard.  We are not trying to light the strike anywhere matches, we just want to make sure the tissue fills any gaps so the matches are held in place.

Alcohol Prep Pads For a Fire Starter Kit

Some of the readers may be wondering about the alcohol prep pads.  The simple truth is they are ultralight weight, compact, and help get a fire going when you need it.  I have kept prep pads in my fire starter kits for over a decade, and they have always worked when they were needed.

Final Thoughts

Making a homemade fire starter kit of a pill bottle can be a fun and rewarding experiment.  There is a certain feeling you get when you set up camp, then pull out your fire starter kit to build a fire, and everything goes according to plan.

Decades ago I would throw some strike anywhere matches in a pill bottle and call it a day.  For years, perhaps decades that, set up worked.  Thinking back to the 1980s I can not think of a single time I was unable to get a fire going with even some strike anywhere matches in a pill bottle.   But time time goes on and things change.  Like everything else in life my fire starter kit evolved into what it is today.

We got this for a camping trip to Boundary Waters Canoe Area as a back-up fire starter. I am so impressed with the amount of spark this thing throws with just minimal effort! It is now my primary fire starter. If I could only take two items in a survival scenario this would be #2 next to a great water filter. Here is the rundown on why I love it:* It is an insane value given it's quality and ability to start a fire. I have payed more and gotten a lot less in other products.* This works even when your gear gets wet. Just keep some dry tender and/or companion magnesium powder.* Operation is simple and predictable. My kids can even use it.* The thing is sized so you wont lose it but small and light enough that it will not encumber you.* Packaged well, shipped promptly, great product/customer support. The only wrinkle I had with it was my own fault. The ferro rod comes with a protective coating/paint that has to be scraped off before it will spark. Took me like 4 seconds to realize this and then it was no factor.I hope this helps you make an informed decision or maybe a deformed incision...~Mahalo2/4/2021 FOLLOW UPI lost my ferro rod! I was going to shoot a video of this thing in action and realized I lost it on my last camping trip.. Without a doubt I will order this one again, I love it so much. Other rods out there don't even tempt me after using this one.I see a lot of reviews condemning the striker. The striker may not be the most ergonomic but please keep in mind it is an intentionally engineered product. The steel in the striker is a specific steel with a specific composition and hardness. A different striker may not produce the same shower of sparks.
This is a good sized fero rod and I like the paracord lanyard and the striker. I've read a few comments about the striker being so-so but I only paid $9 for this thing and I can get past a mediocre striker. Besides, who doesn't have a knife to strike with if you're going to be in the woods? I have some smaller "survival" fero rods and they can be a bit awkward to use due to their small size. This rod is easy to hold and puts out a shower of sparks. I bought 2 of these for camping and a BOB and I'll buy 2 more to put in my day pack and a get home bag. Worth every bit of $9.
I played around with this a bit to get the feel for it and its capabilities. not all rods are equal.the first thing, I tried a dry cotton ball that I had pulled apart and made into a fluffy "nest" of sorts. the second was a wad of newspaper. I tried it against a small pile of wood shavings. each time they lit pretty easily.if you know how to make a fire getting the sparks to it isn't a big deal. if you a learner, sit down with some good old fashioned youtube and get yourself some book learnin' on the subject. everyone should know how to make fires without a lighter or matches. a ferro rod is just another tool in the arsenal. I found the striker to be sufficient but not "perfect". I think if you are looking at these, you should also have a sturdy knife to go with it. if you have a quality knife the striker is less important to have around. I will personally keep them together because its a decent little kit as it is.it only took me a few flicks with the striker to send a shower of sparks into my bbq grill and light the fires i had been attempting with various materials. I would recommend this rod as easy to use and fairly durable. I feel like I know what to expect from this rod in the event that I would ever need to use it. its really all you can ask of a ferro rod, isnt it?

I teach Outdoor living skills to 4th through 12th grade students. Other fire starters are difficult to grasp Once kids understand to put their thumbs in the indentations they can make nice big sparks. Contains no magnesium bar to shave, so I use with dryer lint or tampon innerds as my tinder. Younger kids need a nice big chunk of lint (like fist sized). With practice I can light a fire in two to three swipes.
I liked how it threw a spark on the first try! I like how the handles have thumb & finger groves. Very comfortable in my hand. Also I loved having the extra cordage on both Stryker and Flint. I have not used it to actually start a fire but will update my review on my next camping trip. I needed it for a fire making kit.
Ha...it asks to rate warmth.. you get warm after you start the fire! At any rate.. it’s light my fire, of course it’s good! It throws tons of sparks for being smaller than my huge Uberleben. I love it and I keep it as a reliable back up. Get yourself sum!

I’ve used several different makes of this type of ferro starter and this is the very best ever. The handle is large and comfortable and the ferro rod is large and should last a long time. Of all the different types I have this is definitely my favorite.
It's larger than it looks in the picture. I wanted to rate it 4 stars because of that but I guess it adds to the value. I wanted to carry it in my pocket everyday. You can but it would take up most your space and I work construction so I can't have that. But it strikes great after you remove the black coating obviously. Big Sparks. The map key instead of a ruler is a great detail. Bottle opener.. why not. Tinder scraper.. sweet. The whistle. I was like man that's dumb. Then I blew it. It rings your ears. I'd pay 10 bucks just for the whistle. Most important.. made in USA. All less than 20 dollars. Can't beat it. But when I lose it or break it I will find a smaller one. If you don't want to carry it everyday buy this
I previously bought a cheaper fire steel that’s kind of difficult to use. When I tried this for the first time I almost set my living room carpet on fire! It definitely throws sparks and long lasting ones at that. Be forewarned. Don’t try it over potentially flammable household items unless you want to set it on fire that is.

Solid fire steel, throws a lot of sparks. The “steel striker” is nice but not practical/functional for striking the ferro rod unless modified. I ended up using my knife, worked great.
Works well but you must get the paint off the striker so the raw steel edge can scratch the rod with a sharp edge.
Great firesteel I've used it a few times now in wet condition made a fire every time.
