Trespassers at the bug out location

A few days ago I was walking along the creek that is the property line between my land and the timber company land. Not only does the timber company grow timber on their land, they also lease the land out to hunters. It is not unusual to see an influx of urban dwellers into rural areas starting a couple of months before hunting season. Most of the people who lease property in rural areas are good people. They just want to get out of the city, do some hunting, get a deer or hog and pass the tradition of hunting to the next generation.

With hunters there is an unspoken code of respect. You do not touch my trail cameras, stands and feeders and I do not touch yours.

Then there are the people who do not care about respect. They will knock your feeders and stands over and steal the trail cameras. These are the vandals and thieves that screw up life for everyone else. For people who visit their lease only a few times a year the vandals are not that big of an issue. All that gets screwed up is a few items such as the deer blind and feeders. For those of us who live in rural areas next to hunting leasing, the vandals can screw with us year round.

What is normal behavior after a disaster

Rate This Article

The SHTF, 3 days later people are angry, hungry and tired. What would be considered normal behavior in that kind of situation? Would it be ok to steal? Would it be ok to loot? Would it be ok to fight? How about pulling a gun on someone that objected to your behavior, would that be ok?

Fox News has an interesting article – Superstorm Sandy brings out the worst in some

There is a quote in that article that got me to thinking,

“In a disaster situation, people aren’t sure what the norms are.”

– Jason Nier, a professor of social psychology at Connecticut College

What is normal?

Normal today is waking up, getting a shower, eating breakfast, then going to work.

What would be normal after a SHTF situation like what happened with Hurricane Sandy?

Would it be socially acceptable to steal because your family needs something? Your kids are hungry, so would it be ok to break into a store to get food?

After Hurricane Katrina the world was witness to deplorable behavior.  Behavior that we only thought existed in horror stories and the movies.  If there was one thing Hurricane Katrina taught us, humanity still has a savage underbelly.

Then along comes Hurricane Sandy.  Three days later we see looting, people digging through trash dumpsters for food, electrical crews pelted with eggs, elected officials complaining how long its taking to get the power restored, fights at gas lines,,,, just a breakdown of civilized behavior.

Would we consider digging through a trash dumpster normal behavior?

Would we consider throwing eggs at emergency responders normal behavior?

Would we consider standing for hours in line to get gasoline normal behavior?

If a type of behavior is not accepted before SHTF, why should it be accepted after SHTF?  Where does society draw a line on what is “normal”?

Examples from the past

If we want an example of how far people can develop a new “normal”, just take a look at Nazi Germany.

Is it normal certain groups to be rounded up and put to death?

Then there was slavery in the Americas.  How can people justify keeping others as slaves?  But it was “normal” to have black slaves in the 1700s and 1800s.

Disasters leave the doors open to a new normal

With a breakdown of government, this leaves the door open for people to accept new normal behavior.

When there are little to no consequences for your actions, what is there to restrain people? If a dozen or two dozen people are looting a store, why not join in? Is there a social obligation to follow the law if nobody else does?

After SHTF, at what point do laws no longer mean anything?

If laws are no longer valid, then what is acceptable behavior?

Dream about aliens controlling the human population

I had a rather strange dream last night (July 28, 2012). The dream was about aliens had decided the human population had grown past a point of no return. We were breeding, polluting, and consuming more then the earth could supply.

In order to save the earth and the human species, aliens decided it was time to clean house. The (the aliens) developed a virus that could be transmitted in powder form. Low flying alien ships acted like crop dusters over our major cities.

The powder covered tens of thousands of people, who in the following days developed the virus, which was contagious between people. The result was millions of people died.

My dream moved from the aliens crop dusting the major cities, to people roaming the streets stealing and killing for food.

One of my sons had it to my house. I was somewhere, but I do not remember my exact location. Somehow, I called my son and told him to start eating my food stockpile. I also told my son about keeping lights on at night, and how that could draw attention, just basic OPSEC stuff.

Somehow or another my wife and I made it home.

The dream was somewhat dark with lots of death and destruction.

Aliens aside, lets just remove them from the equation, I think my dream was how humans have reached the edge of our resources. We might have plenty of oil, but what about food? Over the past few years the U.S. has experienced several droughts, which have ruined corn crops.

With continued drought and climate change, what are people supposed to do about food and water? I think that food and safe drinking water is what my dream was about.

Looters will overrun your Bug Out Location

Think your Bug Out Location is safe? Think again. Looters will overrun your camp, kill you and your family, take your supplies and there is little you can do about it.

The difference between you and the looters, after they win the war in the cities, the looters will head to the countryside looking for food. The survivors from the cities will be battle hardened, have an idea of what they are doing, and will make short work of your defenses.

How many survivalist gets hands on training on using their weapons? How many people in your group have combat experience?

There is a difference in tactical shooting experience, and combat experience.

A lot of people thinking going out to the range and shooting paper targets will prepare them for when the crap hits the fan.

This video got me to thinking about the whole looter worse case situation.

MAINEPREPPER is right on target. I know for a fact that I do not get enough trigger time, and there is no excuse for that.

Over the past 2 – 3 years I have got a lot of my preps in order – #10 cans, food in mylar bags, chickens,,,.

The time has come to get some trigger time in.

One of the problems I see with preppers, they usually buy cheaply made products. This come from the buy it cheap and stack it deep mindset.

When it comes time to buy an AR15, a lot of people put price first, quality second. When you need that rifle, you are going to wish you had bought for quality. Do you “really” want to use the cheapest rifle you can find to protect your family?

Then after people buy the cheapest rifle they can find, they stockpile the cheapest ammunition they can find. People that buy cheap and stack deep have to deal with 2 cheaply made components, and hope” things work well in the end.

Post your comments in this forum thread – Preppers are going to die
