First Aid Kit, Fishing Supplies and Propane
Over the past few weeks we have been talking about spreading your survival gear purchases out over an extended period of time. Instead of dropping several hundred dollars at once, spend $20 here, $30 there, and after a few weeks you and your family will have a nice stockpile of survival gear.
In this article, lets talk about first aid kits, fishing supplies and propane.
First Aid Kits – Almost always a good investment, especially if their on sale. A couple of weeks ago a local big-box-mart had a coleman first Aid kit on sale for something like 10% or 15% off. So I thought why not, we can use a first aid kit in our camping box anyway. So this kit was bought just to take on camping trips with the family.
First aid kits are one of those things that are often overlooked and neglected until their needed. And then its “oh crap” I forgot to put <insert needed item here> in the kit, what are we going to do now?
Propane – is one of the few survival gear supplies that last forever. As long as the bottles are not stored in a wet location where they can rust, or where the bottles can be damaged, everything should be good. I like propane because the bottles can be stored at the camp, and when I need them they are there. Its not like gasoline that goes bad over time, or needs some kind of special treatment to preserve the quality.
Propane also has a wide variety of uses – lanterns, propane stoves, single burner camp stoves and space heaters for a few examples. Propane provides the small comforts of life that everyone likes – warmth, light and hot meals.
Out on the Angelina River sunday

3 day camping trip on the Angelina River
It all started several months ago when I was telling my buddy about the undeveloped / primitive camping spots on the Angelina River here in Jasper Texas. Years ago we used to go camping along the bayous and marshes around Bridge City and Orangefield, Texas. But we have not done that in several years. So after talking for a little bit, we decided to take a camping trip on the Angelina River.
Back in early November, a date of November 29 – December 1 was picked. The permit was submitted and the site was reserved.
November 26, 2010 my daughter and I took the boat out – to make sure that it would run ok for the camping trip, and to check on the site my buddy and I were going to be using. The site we had reserved was occupied on November 26th so my daughter and I could not stop and take a look at it. So we just turned around, and headed back home. The boat ran fine, so there were no worries there.
November 28, 2010 my wife and I drop my kids off at my moms house where my ex-wife will pick them up. From there, my wife and I head over to my buddies house, visit for a little while, then he rides back to my house with my wife and I. Instead of him making the drive to my house Monday, we just picked him up on the way back home.
Planning a hunting camping trip on the river
A buddy of mine called last night and asked if I wanted to go on a camping / hunting trip on the Angelina River sometime soon. My answer was “of course”.
I’am not going to disclose the exact location or dates until after the fact.
The plan involves getting one of the primitive camping spots on the Angelina River close to Jasper, Texas and go hunting in the public hunting lands. When I bought my hunting license, I also bought a fishing and public hunting lands permit. Being on the river would give me the chance to do some fishing, camping, and all kinds of hunting.
The trip will probably span 2 – 3 days.
Now I just have to get a map of the public hunting land available where we are going camping. When I bought my public hunting lands license, a few days later I received a hand book with maps of the entire state of Texas. The hand book showed where the public hunting lands are at.
Summer is almost over
As Labor Day approaches, this marks a good time to reflect over the past summer. Overall, the summer of 2010 was a great summer – my dad gave me a boat a few months ago, so a lot of time was spent on the river fishing and camping. My wife and I got to go fishing a couple of times. Being sick for the first 2 weeks in August was no fun, but I’am felling a lot better now – except for a slight residual headache. With all Texas summers, the heat has terrible.
Labor day plans include a bar-b-q with a brisket, maybe some ribs, chicken, sausage, ranch style beans and whatever else I can fit on the grill.
After Labor Day focus is going to shift a little more towards hunting. My kids and I might head out to the deer lease to check the stands and feeders out.
Another trip to the Angelina River
The alarm clock went off around 5:45am – but I stayed in bed for a little bit. Got up, got my shower, brushed teeth, deodorant (you do not want body order while fishing), then I went into my sons room to wake him up.
While my son was getting his shower, and taking care of his business, I loaded the tackle boxes, poles and day packs in the boat.
It was one of those trips that I have been wanting to make for a long time. The day before (July 9, 2010) I took the time to get everything ready – the gas cans were fueled up, the poles and tackle boxes were set next to the front door, the day packs were filled with fresh water, first aid kit, an Eversafe Meal, ice chest put in the boat,,,,,, and a few more things.
July 25 trip to the Angelina River
The day started off kinda early (for a Saturday anyway). The plans were for my son and I to get up around the crack of dawn, get a shower, get something to eat and head out. But things did not work out that way. Instead of getting on the river around 6am, it was more like 8:30. But even if we got a late start, it was still a beautiful day, the gators were out and the fish were biting.
We launched the boat at Bevilport, which is a public boat launch off Highway 63. Coming from Jasper, Texas, you turn left at the VFW sign, then drive for about 4 – 5 miles. On the way your going to pass some nice looking fields with traces of old pecan tree plantations. There is one rather large field where the cows share the shade provided by a few oak and pine trees.
My daughter turns 14 tomorrow
Well, what can you say, kids grow up. They have their own journey through life, they will make all of the same mistakes you did. Maybe some not so bad, maybe some worse.
Food sources in streams and creeks

Fishing with top water lures
Doing some fishing at Lake Sam Rayburn in East Texas. The tiny torpedo in the video is one of my favorite top water lures of all time. It seems to work best when the wind is not blowing very hard and the top of the water is smooth. If there are any hungry bass in the area, this lure will find them.
