Stockpiling AR-15 magazines for shtf

Stockpiling AR-15 magazines for shtf

What AR-15 magazines would you stockpile for a complete SHTF / TEOTWAWKI situation? Lets think about this for a minute. The quick answer might be pmags. But how long do pmags last? Will they last 10, 20, 30, 40,,, or more years?

We know that aluminum magazines will last just about forever, unless they are abused or smashed with a hammer. From time to time a feed lip might become bent. Or an ear might break off while taking the baseplate off. But for the most part aluminum magazines are pretty solid.

If you are stockpiling survival gear for a long term SHTF situation, do you want to put all of your eggs in one basket?

Justification For Owning An AR-15

Rate This Article

Ever since the Sandy Hook shooting gun owners have been having to justify their reasons for owning an AR-15.  Personally, I think the only reason that needs to be given is “because I want one.”  I feel I should not have to “justify” my choices in which firearms I wish to own.  As a law abiding citizen there is no chance my AR is going to be used in a crime.  And as a law abiding citizen   I seen no reason to explain myself to anyone.Kevin Felts, blogger and survivalist

Free men do not explain themselves, we do as we wish when we wish.

Servants, slaves and criminals explain themselves.

With that being said, I would like to provide my opinion as to why people own an AR-15.  I am in no way justifying my ownership of an AR-15, simply because rights do not have to be justified.  I am giving reasons why I choose to own an AR-15.

The AR-15 is cool – It is awesome looking, it feels good in my hand.  Handling an AR is like patting my wife on her butt, it provides me with a sense of manly satisfaction.

Palmetto State Armory Pink M4

For the sake of discussion lets say that some kind of SHTF event has happened; some kind of new flu has developed, financial collapse, nuclear war,,, something has happened to send the world to hell in a handbag.  It is now up to you and your family to protect your property, livestock, garden,, and other resources.

Building my wife (her name is Kristy) an AR-15 that appeals to her is part of my prepping in depth rather then breadth SHTF survival plan.  Instead of trying to get my wife to shoot a rifle that does not appeal to her, I decided to build a Palmetto State Armory M4, then deck it out in pink Magpul MOE and Suregrip parts.Pink M4 carbine

In the current state of panic buying anything AR-15 is almost impossible to find.  In most cases, if a website or store gets something in stock, it is sold out in a matter of minutes.  What is sad is a lot of companies resort to price gouging when panic buying kicks in.

I have to say a couple of things about Palmetto State Armory, they are getting stuff in on a regular basis, and they are not price gouging.

Ergo Grip 4045 BK Review

Rate This Article

Looking for a quick and easy way to improve the handling of your AR-15?  Look no further then the Ergo Grip. In this article we are reviewing the Ergo Grip 4045 BK.

Some details from the Ergo Grip website:

• The ergonomically enhanced ERGO Tactical Deluxe Grip® fits AR/M4 rifles

• Same grip features as our original ERGO Grips, but in a wider, heavier textured design

• Ambidextrous palm swell provides shooters with proper trigger finger placement

• An A2 sized inner cavity that is capable of storing many kit systems available on the retail market

• Ambidextrous

Installation of pretty straight forward.  On my AR-15 the pistol grip was held in place by a flathead bolt. I got a flathead screw driver out of the tool box, removed the original pistol grip, then installed the Ergo Grip 4045 BK.

My Ergo Grip 4045 BK did not come with a new bolt, but the package did include replacement washers. This is in contrast to the Ergo Grip 4139-BK I installed on my AK-47, which included a replacement bolt.

Overall, the Ergo Grip 4045 BK handled well through the shooting test. The oversized grip did not seem to be to large my average sized hands, or my daughters hands.

With heavy gloves on, the grip handled better then the factory AR-15 grip.

One of the things that I really like about the Ergo Grip, its made in the USA. With the economy the way it is, we need all the jobs we can get. By buying an Ergo Grip, you are getting a quality product at a great price, and you are supporting jobs here in the USA.

Ask yourself, would you rather pay higher taxes to support people on welfare, or would you rather buy stuff made in the USA? Think about that when you are thinking about buying gear for your AR-15.

* Full Disclosure – I received the Ergo Grip 4045 BK at no cost to myself. Even though I received the Ergo Grip 4045 BK at no cost, I did my best not to let that influence my opinion.  My honest opinion of the grip, is that you are getting a quality product and at an honest price.

Tour of the Windham Weaponry Factory

Rate This Article

The Military Arms Channel (Sturmgewehre) has posted another excellent video on youtube. This time its a tour of the Windham Weaponry factory.

Even though the video covers a lot of good topics, there is little mention of making the Whindham Weaponry AR-15 close to mil-spec.

Does Windham Weaponry make their own lower receivers, or does someone make the receiver for Windham Weaponry? Since the video did not show any of the CNC milling machines, I am going to guess someone else makes the lower receiver.

The thing Windham Weaponry is going to have to overcome is the bad reputation Bushmaster developed. Sending rifles out of the factory with unstaked castle nuts is not going to help their reputation either.

A few months ago I saw a Windham Weaponry AR-15 at a local store. When I saw the castle nut was not staked, I did not give the rifle a second glance.

If Windham Weaponry wants to run with the big dogs, they need to offer mil-spec parts, and higher quality parts. Why offer an AR-15 style rifle with the typical forearm grip and ugly standard pistol grip? Lets step up, and put some Ergo Grips parts on the rifle.

The Ar-15 market is very competitive. Why should I buy a Windham Weaponry when I can buy a Sig Sauer M400 or Palmetto State Armory for around the same price? Why should I buy a Windham Weaponry when I can get a Colt 6920 for around $200 more? And Colt has a proven military history of reliability.

I am not trying to harp on Windham Weaponry, I am just trying to be honest.

It would really help if Windham Weaponry had some military contracts behind them. Maybe those contracts will come in time?

Firearms Every Survivalist Should Own

Ok Survivalist, its time to talk about firearms every serious prepper should own.

AK-47 AR-15 Survival RiflesWhether you are in an urban survival situation, have a homestead you plan on using as a Bug Out Location, bugging in, or bugging out to the wilderness, lets put together a solid list of well preforming firearms.

Requirements for this list require the firearm to have a long history of civilian or military service, and must have a reputation of being reliable.

Ruger 10/22 is the bees knees of 22 rifles. There are a lot of 22 rifles out there, but few of them can compare to the reliability and the customization of the Ruger 10/22.

My first experience with a Ruger 10/22 was sometime in 1984 or 1985 when 3 of my buddies and I were on a 3 day camping trip. We loaded up an aluminum boat and headed out to one of the bayous close to Bridge City, Texas.

On the second day of the camping trip after eating lunch, Allen and I took the dishes to the bayou to wash them. While we were washing the dishes, we saw a nutria rat on the other side of the slough. 1 shot with the Ruger 10/22 took care of the animal. Allen and I got in the aluminum boat we used to reach the camping spot, then paddled over to retrieve the nutria rat.

We skinned the nutria rat and brought it back to the camping spot where it was roasted over a camp fire and eaten. Even though we had just eaten dinner, it was just canned chili and we were still hungry. The meat from that nutria rat really hit the spot.

Thoughts on the AR-15 AK-47 and FN/FAL

AK-47 AR-15 Survival RiflesAs I am sitting here thinking about buying another rifle, my thoughts keep turning back to the AR-15.  Even though the AK-47 is a little cheaper, its the reliability, cheap ammo, light weight of the weapon, availability of the ammo, shootability,,,,, that keeps me coming back to the AR.

In a SHTF situation, and I had to hand a rifle to my wife, son or daughter, how well would they be able to handle the rifle?  That is just one of the many questions I have to ask myself.

In this article we are going to be looking at 3 of the most popular SHTF rifles and battle rifles in the  world: the AK-47, AR-15 and the FN/FAL.  The AK shoots the 7.62×39, the AR shoots the 223/5.56mm and the FN/FAL shoots the 308 Winchester / 7.62NATO round.  These rifles were picked because they have a reputation of being reliable in just about all combat situations and they have been battle proven in several conflicts.

Lets start from the very beginning:

Inserting a magazine

AK-47 uses a cam style magazine, where the magazine has to be cammed into position
FN/FAL uses the same type of cam action, but seems to be a better design then the AK
AR-15 magazine goes straight in

In a stressful situation, its going to be easier for someone to insert an AR magazine then any of the others.

After inserting the magazine, its going to be easier for the FN/FAL or the AR-15 to charge the weapon then the AK-47.

People may argue that with proper training the AK magazine is just as easy to insert as the AR or the FN/FAL magazines. The thing is, not everyone has time or money to take the whole family to the range on a regular basis and fire off thousands of rounds in training exercises. For someone that gets to shoot a few times a year, the AR is going to be easier to load then any of the other rifles.

Charge the weapon

DS Arms SA58 FN-FAL

DS Arms SA58 FN-FAL, surefire G2X Pro and Maxpedition Noatak

AK charging handle is on the right hand side of the weapon. After the magazine is inserted with the left hand, the shooter has to either reach over the receiver to charge the weapon, or switch hands that is holding the weapon and use the right hand to cycle the bolt.

FN/FAL charging handle is on the left side of the weapon. After the magazine is inserted with the left hand, the left hand stays on the left side of the rifle and cycles the bolt.

AR-15 charging handle is on the rear of the receiver, making is easy to charge for right or left handed shooters.
