Rifle Penetration Test

Military Arms Channel on youtube does some pentration test on the 308 Winchester, 7.62×39, 5.45×39 and the 5.56mm.

In the video the tress are said to by 3 feet in diameter. I think that statement is in error. Its probably more like 3 feet in circumference´╗┐ instead of diameter. A simple way to convert circumference´╗┐ to diameter, measure the circumference then divide by 3. If you want to be exact, measure the circumference and then divide by 3.14. For most intents and purposes for this type of video, divide by 3.

I was surprised the 5.45×39 penetrated the tree while the other calibers did not.

What “really” surprised my was the lack of penetration by the 308 Winchester. But then again, shooting from a bullpup the 308 may not have reached terminal velocity. I wonder how the 308 would have done out of a 20 inch or longer barrel, or from a bolt action rifle instead of a semi-automatic.

Why did the 5.45×39 the tree, while the 7.62×39 and the 5.56mm did not?

Pick one rifle or shotgun for survival

.30 caliber survival rifleSome kind of new disease has broke out, society has collapsed and no more trucks are rolling. Over the following weeks the power goes out, the water stops running, people stop driving their cars and trucks, friends, neighbors and strangers come around begging for food.

The food preps are slowly being eaten. But the food is not an issue, because you still have your backup food preps at your Bug Out Location. If your family can reach the remote location safely, you will have food, water, seeds to plant a garden, and getting a rabbit out of the field next to the creek should not be an issue. The problem is getting there.

Its been at least a month since your car or truck has had gas in it. So now you and your family has to walk to the Bug Out Location. Your family has to go through the middle of town, hit a set of railroad tracks, go about 30 miles following the tracks, hit a pipeline, go another few miles following the pipeline, then its just a short trip through the woods. Your family should be able to make the trip in about 3 days.

You grab your Bug Out Bag, go to the gun safe, open it up, and you can only take one firearm, what would it be?

Firearms Every Survivalist Should Own

Ok Survivalist, its time to talk about firearms every serious prepper should own.

AK-47 AR-15 Survival RiflesWhether you are in an urban survival situation, have a homestead you plan on using as a Bug Out Location, bugging in, or bugging out to the wilderness, lets put together a solid list of well preforming firearms.

Requirements for this list require the firearm to have a long history of civilian or military service, and must have a reputation of being reliable.

Ruger 10/22 is the bees knees of 22 rifles. There are a lot of 22 rifles out there, but few of them can compare to the reliability and the customization of the Ruger 10/22.

My first experience with a Ruger 10/22 was sometime in 1984 or 1985 when 3 of my buddies and I were on a 3 day camping trip. We loaded up an aluminum boat and headed out to one of the bayous close to Bridge City, Texas.

On the second day of the camping trip after eating lunch, Allen and I took the dishes to the bayou to wash them. While we were washing the dishes, we saw a nutria rat on the other side of the slough. 1 shot with the Ruger 10/22 took care of the animal. Allen and I got in the aluminum boat we used to reach the camping spot, then paddled over to retrieve the nutria rat.

AK-47 ERGO Grip SUREGRIP Review

AK-47 ERGO Grip SUREGRIPIf there is one thing about the AK-47 that sucks, it has to be the factory pistol grip. The AK-47 is a great rifle, but lets face the facts, most of the factory pistol grips suck, big time.

Thank goodness Falcon Industries has come to the rescue with the Ergo Grip Suregrip.

The Ergo Grip Suregrip is a quick and easy replacement to the factory AK-47 grip. The model I had the opportunity to review was the ERGO AK Classic Grip, model number 4139-BK.

Some specs from the Ergo Grip website:

  • Ambidextrous design with smooth finger grooves
  • Superior design and textured finishes for enhanced weapon control compared to smaller factory grips
  • Bottom storage compartment with tethered rubber plug
  • Installs with 6mm bots (included)

Installation

Installing the Suregrip was straight forward, remove the old grip, install the new grip.

The only issue I ran into, a standard allen wrench was not long enough to reach the bottom of the grip. This is not a big deal, my wife and I made a trip to the local hardware store to buy a allen socket.

AK-47 is the ultimate teotwawki survival rifle

Overlooking a creek with a WAR-10 AK-47Why is the AK-47 is the ultimate survival rifle? Because it works.

Year of development: 1947
Caliber: 7.62×39
Years of service: 1947 – present
Nations of service: Every communist nation under the sun
Conflicts of service: Just about every major conflict since 1947
Bullet diameter: 308 – 311
Bullet weight: 123 grains
Effective range: 400 meters
Capacity: Standard 30 round magazine

I have to be perfectly honest, the AK-47 is not my primary SHTF survival rifle.

That honor goes to the AR-15 and the FN/FAL.

AR-15 with its 223 Remington / 5.56mm NATO is well suited for dealing undesirable predators that come around the Bug Out Location and small game. There are a good number of people that deer and hogs with the 223 Remington, but I am not one of them. I am a firm believer of using enough gun for the job. When I go deer hunting, I use at least a 270 Winchester or a 280 Remington / 7mm Express.

The low recoil of the AR-15 makes it appealing to people like my teenage daughter.

FN/FAL with its 308 Winchester is well suited in a defensive role, and for taking deer sized game. Remington core-Lokt in 150 grains is more then capable of dropping a whitetail deer, or game of equal size.

My son hunts with a Marlin 336 30-30. The ammunition he uses is Remington core-lokt 150 grain softpoint. 150 grain bullet makes a small hole going in, and a larger hole going out. In the past 4 years my son has harvested 3 southeast Texas whitetail deer. One year he did not see anything worth taking.

Why Every American Should Own an AK-47

Lets start with this simple statement: It is the duty of every citizen to be armed.

99% of the liberals out there will object to that statement. So let me follow up with some evidence to back up by statement.

Thomas Jefferson – For a people who are free and who mean to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security.

Thomas Jefferson – “We must train and classify the whole of our male citizens, and make military instruction a regular part of collegiate education. We can never be safe till this is done.”

As per Thomas Jefferson, it is our duty as citizens to own and to be trained in the use of a firearm, and to have a proper education.

When the U.S. was founded, there was no provisioned military. It was the civilian militia that fought for our freedom.

The problem is, liberals do not understand the concept of personal liberties, personal freedoms or civic duties.

Painting AK-47 Magazines

One of the issues with AK-47 magazines, they are made out of steel, and steel rust. So from time to time it might be necessary to paint your AK mags. This article is going to discuss how I paint my AK-47 magazines. This may not be the “best” way to do it, but this is how I paint my mags.

If you wanted a professional paint job, you would need to disassemble the magazine, buff the paint off all of the parts, spray on a layer of primer, spray a few coats of the color paint you want, then reassemble the magazines.

Screw that.

All I am going to do is buff with a wire wheel then paint.

I have a spare boat trailer in the backyard, so that i what I painted my magazines on. Where the tongue of the trailer meets the frame, that is where I put the block of wood I was going to be working on.

Thoughts on the AR-15 AK-47 and FN/FAL

AK-47 AR-15 Survival RiflesAs I am sitting here thinking about buying another rifle, my thoughts keep turning back to the AR-15. Even though the AK-47 is a little cheaper, its the reliability, cheap ammo, light weight of the weapon, availability of the ammo, shootability,,,,, that keeps me coming back to the AR.

In a SHTF situation, and I had to hand a rifle to my wife, son or daughter, how well would they be able to handle the rifle? That is just one of the many questions I have to ask myself.

In this article we are going to be looking at 3 of the most popular SHTF rifles and battle rifles in the world: the AK-47, AR-15 and the FN/FAL. The AK shoots the 7.62×39, the AR shoots the 223/5.56mm and the FN/FAL shoots the 308 Winchester / 7.62NATO round. These rifles were picked because they have a reputation of being reliable in just about all combat situations and they have been battle proven in several conflicts.

Lets start from the very beginning:
