Decided to go ahead and get some more pepper plants in the ground. The local Walmart has their garden plants on sale, so I thought why not? I bought five more pepper plants for $2.94 each.
Peppers usually do a good job of withstanding the Texas summer heat. All they really need is plenty of water and they usually bear until the first frost.
For fertilizer I am using aged chicken manure from under the brooder house mixed with dirt. Also, under the plant is a fresh chicken yard egg. Using eggs as fertilizer is a little experiment I am doing this year.
- Jalapeno pepper
- Cowhorn pepper
- Tabasco pepper
- Garden Salsa pepper
More Pepper Plants
For 2018 I wanted to focus on food, and lots of food. Which means I also want to make my own salsa and jar my own pepper plants.
With the plants planted today, that gives me around five or six jalapeno peppers. I think one from the original batch died. A couple of days after the first set of plants were planted, we got around eight inches of rain overnight. I suspect the plants got too much water and drown.
Another reason why I want to grow more pepper plants, is because I want to dry and grind some of the cowhorn peppers into a spice.
At the end of the year I hope to have:
- Jarred peppers.
- Homemade salsa.
- Dried cowhorn chili peppers.
Why so many peppers?
For one, they are supposed to be rich in Vitamin C.
Second, they are very versatile when it comes to cooking. The picante sauce can be poured over a wide range of food, the Jalapeno peppers can be used for cooking, and the cowhorn chili peppers can be used as a spice.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I will be off to growing a nice crop of pepper plants.
Stay tuned for more updates on the 2018 garden.
