My New Adversary The Chicken Snake

My new adversary and I came face-to-face this morning, and it was not a pretty sight.

On the morning of May 27, 2013 I went out to check on the chickens and rabbits. Before the chickens were let out of the coop I walked to the end of the run to make sure it was closed. Took a couple of steps over to the rabbit hutch, looked up, and within arms length on top of the hutch was a chicken snake looking straight at me. The rabbit hutch is 8 feet long, the snake was almost the length of the hutch.Rabbit exploring her new home

The first thing I did was take a couple of steps backwards, reminded myself that cotton mouths do not climb, then went into the house to get a camera. What good is a story without pictures.

My wife grabbed her camera and started taking pictures.

The snake seemed to be looking for a way to get into the rabbit hutch. The rabbits seem a little big for the snake to eat, but you never know.

Before I could get a rake to get the snake off the hutch, it had retreated to the safety of some brush.

If being face-to-face with a chicken snake was not bad enough, I found a second snake just a few minutes later.

Clearing More Timber At The Farm

Before and after picture of the trees that were cut

Clearing timber sounds boring.  Some of my readers may be wondering why I posting a video about this, much less an article.   I went out and cut some trees, so what?

In the prepping / survivalist community there is this common misconception that if SHTF there is a farm in the family that has not been used in 40 (or more years) that the family is going to use as a bug out location. With a few days of hard work the farm can be up and running in a matter of days.

To bring this common survivalist plan to reality I am documenting what it takes to bring a farm that has not been used in 40 years up to speed.

If all you want to do is breakup the soil and plant some seeds, then yea, it may only take a few days. But if you want to rebuild the fences, have boards to build a chicken coop out of, have fence post, firewood,,, have a working farm with livestock, then you will need to cut timber.

Chickens Or Ammunition

chickens or ammunition for SHTF

Lets play a game – chickens or ammunition. You can pick one or the other, but not both.

Chickens – 5 laying hens that are one year old and in good health. The 5 hens would include a mixture of barred rock, rhode island red, buff orpington and australorp.

You can probably expect around 200 eggs a year from each hen, for a total of around 1,000 eggs.

No roosters are included with the hen package.

Or

Ammunition – A box of your most needed (or favorite) rifle caliber. This is a box of 20, and not a case or brick of 500 or more.

This can be any caliber you may need – 22 long rifle, 223 Remington, 7.62×39, 30-30 Winchester, 270, 280, 30-06, 7mm magnum, 300 Winchester magnum,,, any caliber you want.

The Price Of Hunting Leases

I knew this day would arrive, and here it is. The hunting lease my family and I have been a part of for the past 15 years has gotten so expensive I can no longer afford to be a member.

1970s – To be on a hunting lease in the 1970s you had to know someone who was a member of the lease. Then that member had to put in a good word for you. A lot of leases had a waiting list of people who wanted to be a member.Whitetail Deer looking at trail camera

2000s – Hunting leases are begging for members.

In the past 30 years we have seen a shift of people who live in rural areas, timber companies have gobbled up land, parents are not introducing their children to hunting, and most importantly, timber companies are being bought up by invest firms.

The great depression of the 1930s saw a shift of people living in rural areas to living in urban areas. The reason for this shift was simple, and that was to find a job.

As the people who were left in rural areas started to die, their property was left to the children who had moved to rural areas. The children who had moved away had no use for the land, so they did not pay the property taxes. Various counties across the nation seized the land for overdue taxes. As the land was auctioned off guess who bought it, the timber companies.

In essence, we allowed timber companies to buy up unwanted land, then charge us for access.

Ammunition Shortage First Half 2013

Here we are approaching the half-way mark of the year (we are not there yet), and the ammunition shortage is showing no signs of letting up.

22 Long Rifle – I have not seen 22 long rifle in about 6 or 7 months. The last time I can remember seeing 22 long rifle in stock was back around November,,, maybe even October 2012.

Even before Sandy Hook 22 long rifle was difficult to find.Kevin Felts blogger and survivalist

223 Remington – Is hit sand miss. Places like Palmetto State Armory have been getting bulk 223 Remington in stock, but my local wal-mart has not.

I have not seen American Eagle or Federal at my local wal-mart in months. The local wal-mart here in Jasper Texas has been getting Tula in every few weeks, so that is what I have been buying. In this type of situation you buy what you can find.

Online stores that are lucky enough to 223/5.56mm in stock are sold out in a matter of minutes.

2013 NRA Show Houston Texas

Man oh man, what a weekend.  My wife and I left Jasper Texas around 6 am Friday morning, got breakfast at Jack in the box in Woodville Texas, and arrived at the NRA show at the 9 am.  Traffic was not that bad.  thank goodness there were no wrecks on HWY 59.

We found a parking lot directly in front of Minute Maid park, which is across from the George R Brown convention center.  Holy crap was parking expensive, we had to pay $30, but the location was perfect.

My wife and I entered the show, obtained our media badges, then started walking around.

This was my wifes first real gun show.  She never showed any interest in gun shows, that was until I built her a pink M4.  Now that she has something she can relate to she is showing more interest.

Meat Production After SHTF

There are all kinds of articles out there talking about meat after SHTF.  You want to know what is missing in a lot of those articles?  Exact details.Cooking at the Bug Out Location

Awhile back we talked about how many chickens would be needed for SHTF.  I would like to do this article in the same manner as the chicken article.

Lets start with one very important question, and that is how much meat does the average person eat?  To find the answer lets turn to the US census.

Per Capita Consumption of Major Food Commodities

Average US meat consumption in 2009:

Commodity Weight / Number
Red Meat, includes beef, veal, lamb and pork. 105.7 pounds
Poultry, includes chicken and turkey. 69.4 pounds
Eggs 246 eggs

For right now lets exclude eggs and focus on red meat and poultry.  We will talk about eggs later.

Two Chips

The story behind this video as I understand it, the wife gets drunk and tells a joke. The husband records the joke, animates it, and makes a video out of it.

Forgot To Close The Chicken Run Gate

Every evening I let my chickens out of their run for about an hour so they can browse around the yard.

During that hour I keep an eye on them to make sure they do not go too far. If they start getting towards the street I get them back to the yard.

I forgot to close to gate to the run last night.

This morning around 6 or 7 chickens got out of the run before I realized what happened and got the gate closed.

Well crap, now the chickens will be roaming wherever they want until this evening. If they get in the street I figure the neighbors will be like “keep your chickens out of the road.”

I will be glad when my wife and I get moved so I do not have to worry about this crap anymore.

Random Thoughts May 6 2013

Over the past few days I have been thinking about a lot of stuff. A lot of small stuff, to small to make their own post about. So I thought I would combine a lot of small topics into a random thoughts post.Kevin Felts, Blogger and Survivalist

I promised a buddy of mine that I would tone the political stuff down. Rather than posting political topics here, I will keep them on PBJ News.  So here goes.

Video Gaming -I guess it is a matter of me getting older, but fewer and fewer games have that “wow” factor.  Back in the 1980s and 1990s some of my buddies and I could play Atari and Super Nintendo for hours at a time.

Now, its takes a lot of keep me interested in a game.  Borderlands 2 got boring within 2 hours and Skyrim lost it after maybe 2 – 3 hours.  The only game that has been able to keep my interest over the past 3 years had been Left 4 Dead 1 & 2.  Since Diablo III has the always on internet requirement I did not even bother buying it.

Rabbit Update Raising Rabbits For SHTF

An update to how the rabbit hutch and hideaway boxes are working out. The hideaway box is working well, but they are moving their food bowls around and spilling their food.

To fix the food bowl problem I ran a screw through the bowl and into the 2×4 under the bowl.

I used a 10 penny nail and hammer to poke a hole in the bottom of the food boil, then secured the bowl with a 2 inch outdoor wood screw.

The doe seems to spend an equal amount of time inside and outside the box, while the buck spends most of his time on top of the box.

The Question That Needs To Be Asked

I would like to ask the readers of this blog a question, do you feel the United States is headed towards an armed rebellion?

Ae we headed towards an armed rebellion?

I often wonder how much more the middle class can take before something breaks?

How many jobs have to go to China?

How many taxes can the government levy?

How many people have to go on welfare?

How many illegal immigrants have to be allowed in the nation?

How many people have to die in this so called “war on terror?”

What has to happen before the people say enough is enough?

If the people are not even willing to vote the two major parties out of office, what makes us think there will be an armed rebellion?

PBJ News

After receiving some complaints about the amount of political commentary on this site, I have decided to do two things:

1 – Reduce the amount of political commentary posted here.

2 – Open a new website where I can rant all I want about political stuff.Kevin Felts, blogger and survivalist

The new site is called PBJ News, as in Peanut Butter and Jelly news. Why PB&J? Because it is quick, simple, and something that fills the soul. It is a name just about everyone can relate to and it is easy to remember.

With all of the gun hating, conservative hating, family values hating sites on the net, I figured we needed a site that pushed conservative values.  I have this vision of PBJ news being not only a conservative news site, but also a conservative opinion site.

I am so tired of gun hating liberal sites spewing their hatred, I figured it was time to open my own site to spread core conservative values.

This is just my personal opinion on things, I think the United States is going to hell in a handbag.  The government has turned against the common working people, while liberals push for social equality for those who do not deserve quality, meaning illegal immigrants.

While companies like apple turn record profits, a record number of people are on welfare.  The major news would rather report on celebrities, rather report on the pressing issues.

We need sites that push for holding people responsible for their crimes, rather than liberal sites who would rather blame society.

Join me in my new endeavor, head on over to PBJ News and add the site to your bookmarks.
