World Enters New Phase As North Korea Test Nuclear Device

North Korea tested a nuclear device with an underground detonation on February 11, 2013.  Along with North Koreas missile program the world moves closer to having a rogue nation with a Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).

This is the first test under the leadership of Kim Jong-un.

Why put so much time, effort and money into building a nuclear missile program when people are starving? There have been reports of starvation being so widespread in North Korea that people are resorting to cannibalism.

There are main two reasons for North Korea to develop nuclear weapons – to use the weapons in an act of war, or use the weapons as a bargaining chip.

Nuclear Strike Against the United States

If North Korea were to use nuclear weapons against the United States, it is doubtful the U.S. would respond with its own nuclear attack.  Due to the liability and long term sigma, the U.S. would respond with conventional weapons.

China would not tolerate the U.S. nuking North Korea anyway.  The nuclear fallout to China poses a great risk.  Then there are the North Korean refugees that would flee to China looking for food, medical care and shelter.

Regardless if the United States invaded North Korea, the U.S. would be the loser.  If just one major U.S. city was nuked, tens of thousands would be killed or injured and infrastructure would take decades to rebuild.

Where would the survivors from the U.S. city go?  How would they find work?  What about long term medical care, who would pay for that?  The government would have to bail out the insurance companies, the affected areas may be turned into a waste land.

Regardless if North Korea is bulldozed into the ocean, they are the winners.  The population of the United States are unaccustomed to hardship and sacrifice.

The financial center for the entire world is in New York.  If that financial center is destroyed, and the people who work there killed, where does that leave the United States?  As we work to rebuild, someone like China steps forward and replaces the U.S. as the world financial leader.

How do we rebuild cities that took centuries to build the first time?  Where does the money and material come from to rebuild New York?

Nuclear Weapon As A Status Symbol

Why do people in the city buy a 4 wheel drive 3/4 ton truck? Its a status symbol.

Why does North Korea want a nuclear weapon? Maybe the nuclear weapon is to be used as a status symbol.

North Korea can stand up and say they have the technology to build nuclear weapons, just like the united States, China and Russia.

Bargaining Chip

The U.S. is a bully. We invaded Vietnam, Iraq twice, and Afghanistan.  We have overthrown democratically elected presidents, and helped to destabilize governments.

What nations has the U.S. not invaded? Nations with nuclear weapons.

Maybe, just maybe, North Korea is using nuclear weapons as a type of deterrent, as a type of bargaining chip.
