In all honesty I did not expect the ammunition shortage to go this long. There is talk that its going to get worse.
When Obama and Dianne Feinstein opened their mouths about gun control in the wake of Sandy Hook, gun owners went into a panic buying frenzy.
Here we are a month later, December 14, 2012 – January 14, 2013, the situation has gone from bad to worse.
Pistol ammunition – gone
Rifle ammunition – gone
22 long rifle – gone
Shotgun – hit and miss
Bolt action and lever action ammunition such as 270 Winchester, 30-30 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield and 45-70 is still on the shelves. The ammunition that is still available has gone up in price over the past month.
November 2012 30-30 Winchester was $15.97 for a box of 20 rounds. During the first week of January 2013 that same box was $16.97. A year ago 30-30 Winchester was selling for $13.97 a box. What is that, close to a 20% increase in a year?
Ammunition shortage is affecting more then civilians, its also affecting law enforcement – Nationwide Ammo Shortage: Police Officers Impacted By Shortage, Rationing Rumors Surface.
Some articles say its going to take a year for supply to get back to normal.
Police departments say they have maybe 6 months of ammunition on hand.
Ok, what is going to happen when police run low on ammunition, and supply is not reaching the streets? Maybe that is why department of homeland security bought millions of rounds of ammunition?
Brownells – is not accepting backorders on certain types of magazines.
Cheaper Than Dirt – raised their prices, so people are calling for a boycott.
Midway USA – listing Pmags as out of stock and no backorder. 223 Remington is listed as out of stock and no backorder.
Palmetto State Armory – everything AR-15 sold out.
Bravo Company – everything sold out, bolt carriers, uppers, magazines,,,,. There are some BCM charging handles available, but that is about it.
Spikes Tactical – is saying a 8 – 12 month backorder. In January 2013 they are filling orders placed in April 2012.
DS Arms – everything AR-15 sold out, some FN/FAL parts and rifles still in stock.
Several articles saying walmart is not buying anymore ammunition until after obama makes his move. In other words, what walmart has on its shelves is all there is going to be. Once that is sold out, there is no estimated time when there will be any more ammunition.
This shortage has me rethinking my whole ammunition stockpile plan. From the looks of things its going to be awhile before the stores get restocked.
The only thing that could make this situation any worse is widespread civil unrest, or a new war,,, anything that would make all newly manufactured ammunition go to the military and/or police.
With supplies stripped, what are the military and police supposed to do for ammunition, new firearms, and replacement parts?
Its a strange feeling knowing the stores are sold out and all I have is my stockpile. This is the same feeling I have after a hurricane has passed through. But unlike a hurricane, the end of the panic buying storm is nowhere in sight. Its been like a month long hurricane that has consumed everything in its path.
